The article analyses the press coverage of refugees arriving from Ro mania and the GDR in Hungary’s four major state-run daily newspapers during the years preceding the regime change, between 1987 and 1989, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. It highlights both the parallels in the nar ratives of daily newspapers that followed centrally determined communication during the state-socialist period and the differences arising from their distinct functions.
