The congregations of the Reformed Church in Hungary suffered great
financial and spiritual losses during the nineteen-fifties. Namely, church
leaders collaborated with the state, and pastors who opposed the nationalization of church properties and other state actions would face reassigning or arrest. Literature has chiefly focused on church leaders, but
it has neglected pastors so far. However, supplementing it with the examples of surviving congregations and their pastors, it will offer a more
complete and more representative picture of the history of the church
under Communist rule. Rev. Lajos Nagy, pastor of such a congregation
in Szőny managed to navigate his congregation through external hardships. The congregation regularly held services and Bible study lessons,
with a growing number of young people joining it. Although the service
of the pastor was innocent and “quiet” in the eyes of the state, his attitude, i.e. he served quietly and kept the community together, became
an outstanding example against the backdrop of removed pastors and
empty churches.
