In this paper, I outline
Antal Németh’s career from the perspective
of his international connections. Németh
was the director-manager of the Hungarian
National Theatre between 1935 and 1944.
His whole career was significantly shaped by
his interest in European theatre and his connections with the international theatrical
scene. Renowned foreign directors and theatre influencers served as his role models in
the 1920s and 1930s, and his academic performance in the international sphere contributed significantly to his directorial career
in his homeland. Following World War II, during the era of state socialism in Hungary, he
had to give up his leading position in Hungary’s cultural life. He lost some connections,
and his ability to keep contact with the remaining ones was limited. Nonetheless, he
maintained a deep interest in scholarly literature and Western theatrical influences.
