Tartalmi leírás:
One of the most important questions in Christian theology is how and in what sense Jesus Christ became the saviour of the world. In my paper, I argue first of all that the traditional interpretations of salvation, can be divided into two main groups. One is that salvation brings about a decisive change in the status of humans, the other is that it brings about a decisive change in the way they think and behave. I call the former the objective-transactional view, given that the act of redemption takes place outside, independently of humanity, and is always based on some transaction in which the person or death of Jesus is the means of payment. At its centre, therefore, is a punctual event. The other view, I call subjective, sees the whole Jesus-event and its effect on human beings as the redemptive act, and thus sees redemption as a process, that cannot be considered a classical transaction, since the human factor does not guarantee a positive result. One could also call the former a cross-centred, and the latter an incarnation-centred view. In this thesis, I will focus on the objective approach to redemption models in order to justify my hypothesis that all of them are based on a sacrificial logic, regardless of whether they explicitly incorporate a ritual approach. To do so, I invoke René Girard's mimetic theory, according to which civilized human communities are the result of spontaneous killing based on scapegoating mechanism. Its routine re-enactment gives rise to ritual practice, an elementary form of religion around which human culture is gradually built. Girard's hypothesis is that the basis and the cohesive force of human coexistence is a practice in which one must pay with one's life in order to maintain the community and restore harmony in human relations and with the divinity as well. This is so deeply embedded in the collective consciousness that its spirit remains even when people no longer practice sacrificial rituals. According to Girard, it is precisely thanks to the biblical tradition, and in particular to the drama of Jesus, that this sacrificial mechanism is exposed. In this context, it is remarkable that one of the most robust theological traditions of Christianity conceives of the act of redemption as a sacrifice. In this paper, I will attempt to explore the reasons for this and to show alternative interpretations in the Christian theological tradition.
