The Bayerische Staatsoper presented Kušej’s interpretation of Macbeth in 2008, a piece of oneiric visual dramaturgy that combined the superimposed power struggles and personal tragedies within a post-apocalyptic scenography. This paper highlights cinematic intertextual allusions and takes a psychoanalytical approach to Kušej’s interpretation of Verdi, focusing primarily on the questions of power hunger, the motif of childlessness, the symbolic/metaphorical images of death and (among other things) Freud’s concept of the uncanny.
