The article deals with the legal protection of aquatic ecosystem. This study concentrates on the legal aspects of waterprotection emphasizing that water law and water protection is a complex area according to interdisciplinaryapproach (hydrology, economic sciences, etc.). The author assesses international and European Union documentsaccording to water protection only marginally and due to the limitation of the study extant the author ratherfocuses on the Hungarian legal situation of waters (which fully complies with the EU legislation andexpectations). As for the Hungarian legislation, besides the water management law and water protection law ofHungary, the article presents the constitutional law aspects of water protection and nature conservation evenanalysing the case law of the Hungarian Constitutional Court.
