The term ugrós [springing dance] is used to designate a widely ramifying group of dance types. The Hungarian ugrós dances fitting into the old dance stratum of Europe survived in the practice of the Carpathian Basin until the XXth century. They could be found in all three dance dialects, but in a geographically varying degree. In the Transylvanian dialect the dance type has been perpetuated by the Székelys of Udvarhely and Csík, the Csángós of Hétfalu and Gyimes and the Székelys of Bukovina. There are no ugrós dances however in western and central part of Transylvania, where they were replaced by more advanced dances. Regional differences normally correlate with different degrees of adherence to tradition, among other factors. It is therefore rather surprising that in more modernized areas a large number of ugrós dances could be collected, whereas in culturally more conservative Transylvania it only survived in the eastern corner and among groups originating from there. This contradiction persuaded the author that it would be worthwhile to examine the specificities of the Transylvanian ugrós tunes.
