| The Forensic Psychiatric and Mental Institution (IMEI) will commemorate the 130th anniversary of its founding in 2026. The study presents the history of the institution from its legal history to the present day. The foundations for the different judgment of mentally ill criminals were laid by the Csemegi Code of 1878, and the National Psychiatric and Mental Institution for Arrested and Convicted Persons was established in 1896 as an institution for monitoring mental health. The first director of the institution was Ernő Emil Moravcsik, a prominent figure in the scientific forensic psychiatry and psychology of the time, and in today’s Hungarian forensic psychiatry. Over the past 130 years, the institution has undergone numerous organizational transformations, adapting to the changing legal environment. Today, as a multi-building institution capable of accommodating 311 people, it carries out complex therapeutic and reintegration activities.
