The dissertation encompasses a critical interpretation of selected works by Sándor Márai from the perspectives of mythological and religious theory, as well as philosophy. Within this context, the focus is primarily on variants of stories, characters, and motifs from ancient Greek mythology.
In addition to exploring myths and mythical elements, I place particular emphasis on the specific ways in which the author employs and creates myths, which, in my view, outline a unique mythical structure within his body of work. According to the basic premise of this research, the universal themes and motifs in Márai’s works are significantly shaped by the powerful influence of Greek mythological tradition and the philosophy that interprets it; when placed in a new context within the writer’s works, this influence outlines a distinctive mythical structure, while also serving as an organizing principle in a significant portion of his body of work.
Through a mythological-critical analysis of eight works, this dissertation examines the distinctive features of Márai’s reception of myths and his own myth-making. The novels Peace in Ithaca, Thirty Pieces of Silver, Sinbad Returns, and Casanova in Bolzano are more directly linked to the mythical stories and motifs familiar from European culture, whereas The Sister, The Embers (novel), The Embers (the play), and Esther’s Inheritance, the mythical elements appear in a less explicit manner and, interacting with one another, form a series of motifs.
In my analysis, I focused primarily on an in-depth examination of three central elements that recur regularly in Greek mythology: the motif (fate), the mytheme (hubris), and the mythologeme (Eros). In my view, through the connotative use of these elements, the author has created a complex mythological system; by focusing on this system, we can interpret the seemingly separate parts of his body of work as a thematically cohesive whole.
