Tartalmi leírás:
The dissertation focuses on the literary periodical A Hét, seeking to understand its poetics, editorial practice and concept of modernity. The taste promoted and presented by A Hét significantly differs from that of early 20th-century literary journals, primarily from the modern poetics associated with Nyugat. By understanding this difference, we can shed new light on some of the poetic endeavors of the 1890s that have been little studied until now. The chapter discussing the dissertation’s methodological and theoretical approach outlines how “fin-de-siecle” and “modern” can be understood in this context and clarifies the frameworks of periodical studies that define and determine its approach. What follows are two closely related arguments. In the first section, the thesis examines the role of editor-in-chief József Kiss as a teacher and mentor in light of his editorial correspondence. The “Heti posta” column reveals the values and criteria that determines the kind of poetry the periodical prefers. The concepts that frequently recur in these messages (intimacy, mood, effect, and immediacy) form a unique system. Of these, I examine the most influential, “mood” (hangulat) as well as the fluctuation in meaning of one of the central aesthetic categories associated with A Hét, “decadence”, analyzing the ways in which the periodical dissociates itself from the label. The second part of the dissertation analyzes the influential tropes and panels that continue to define the interpretive possibilities of the poetry published in A Hét. Starting with its reception from the first half of the 20th century, we then turn to the periodical’s self-descriptions through advertisements and calls for subscription, to arrive at the period preceding its launch; in the concluding chapter, I trace the development of József Kiss’s image as a poet, pointing out that the tropes associated with A Hét already predated its emergence, linked to its editor-in-chief. Although the editor-in-chief remains the “protagonist” of the dissertation, the analysis is fundamentally constructivist in nature: considers the fluidity of the concepts that play a central role in A Hét’s meta-poetic approach, while also maintaining that (in the context of the periodical) the name “József Kiss” should be understood as a signifier implying certain values and attitudes.
