The private lawyer Antal Almási, who left behind a remarkable academic oeuvre, especially in the field of family law, was a representative of the Hungarian historical school of law. According to his colleague and friend Salamon Beck, of all Béni Grosschmid's students, Almási was the most addicted to the master. Almási's puritanical personality, analytical method and logical analysis enabled him to summarise contemporary Hungarian private law in terms of customary law, the draft private code and judicial practice at a time when continental Europe had already opted for codification over flexible case law. His special merit is that his German-language work conveyed the (less known) scientific results of Hungarian private lawyers to the Western legal culture, and in the field of family law he applied a system which was dogmatically demanding, but peculiarly Hungarian.
