The issue of work-life balance has become even more important with the rapid spread and ubiquity of virtual work, and it can significantly impact an individual’s well-being. This study explored work-family and family-work conflicts in virtual, hybrid, and in-person work environments in Hungary. The results, based on responses from 573 employees, showed that work had a greater impact on family life; and family life was less in conflict with work obligations. Different respondent groups were identified based on work location, gender, age, and job title. Statistical analysis revealed that work-family conflict was highest for those in a presenteeism work environment, lowest for those in a full home office, and in between for those in a hybrid format. Interestingly, work-family conflict was found to be more prevalent for men compared to women. Although there was no statistical correlation between age and employment relationship, a significant relationship was observed between job title and work-family conflict. The findings suggest that remote and hybrid work can provide opportunities for achieving a better work-life balance, and further research in this area could contribute to employee well-being and retention.
