Francesco Barberini (1597–1679) bíboros 1633-tól haláláig a római inkvizíció nagy inkvizítora volt. He was a member of the Inquisitorial tribunal that investigated Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) following the publication of his works supporting the views of Nicolaus Copernicus that the Sun, not the Earth, was the centre of the universe. Barberini was one of the three members of the tribunal who refused to convict the scientist, although the majority verdict was that Galileo was suspected of heresy and he was sentenced to indefinite imprisonment, later commuted to house arrest, where he remained until his death in 1642.
