The geography textbooks are always imprints of the educational situation and the social and steering expectations of an actual era, in addition, prove the pedagogical approach as well as the social state of the disciplines represented by the subject. Concerning their judgement from point of view of content and
methodology, there will never be consensus because beyond the methodological culture it is determined by the tighter environment, in which the pedagogical work takes place. The first part of the paper provides a survey on the milestones of the development of the Hungarian geography textbooks from the beginning
until the present, which enables to see the way leading the recent situation. The second part treats a research accomplished in teachers’ circles, which provides opportunity for a glance into the habits by using the textbooks and into the expectations towards these textbooks.
