In my dissertation, I analyse the two most common functions of three discourse markers, the hát, the izé and the ugye. I investigate the roles of the elements in my own corpus of children's and adult discourse and in the MONYEK (Mátyus-Orosz 2014) database. My goal is to complement the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) model with an analysis system, a meaning model of my own, that can handle the meanings of discourse markers. After a precise identification of the features, I present other features (e.g. contextual, structural) related to the NSM model, and I add features (e.g. prosody, non-verbal cues) to the framework that can help to reveal the relationships between meanings. After presenting other features closely related to the model, I will use the NSM grammatical set to map the permanent semantic meanings of the elements and their specific appearances (Wierzbicka 1976, 1988), and I will also compare the feature pairs of markers in the meaning model. Finally, I present machine learning experiments using the quantified data prose with the aim of outlining how several algorithms can distinguish between the functions of discourse markers using the prose features. The results of this thesis are relevant for the nowadays very popular discourse marker research in linguistics.
