Tartalmi leírás:
One of the most important contemporary challenges facing the content industryand culture sector is long-term preservation. In recent years, there has beenvirtually no conference in this sector where this topic has not been discussed insome form. A frequent recurring feature of these presentations is the referenceto the OAIS standard. This paper briefly introduce this standard, explaining theprocess and importance of its Hungarian implementation/adoption.The reference model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) wasoriginally developed for space research purposes at the turn of the millenniumin an international cooperation (CCSDS) led by NASA, but within a few yearsit was also adopted by institutions concerned with the long-term preservationof cultural heritage, such as archives and libraries. Because of this spread, theInternational Organization for Standardization (ISO) has adopted CCSDS 650.0-M-2 standard without change, which now conforms to ISO 14721:2012, andthe Hungarian version of which (with the support of the National SzéchényiLibrary) was published in spring 2022 as MSZ ISO 14721:2022.As a reference model, OAIS addresses theoretical issues of long-termpreservation. While it does not lay down specific implementation guidelines,it is the model on which most software and institutional practices in long-termpreservation are based, including those of the Hungarian National Archivesand the National Széchényi Library’s Digitization Centre and Web Archive. Byimplementing/adopting the international standard, we hope to take a first steptowards standardizing the terminology in the field in Hungary, and to offer anopportunity for institutions not yet using OAIS to learn about the referencemodel and implement it in the future.https://doi.org/10.31915/NWS.2022.3
