Tartalmi leírás:
Slang and jargon terms form an integral part of medical language. Medical slang and jargon have a growing vocabulary, yet its use remains mostly undocumented in mainstream medical literature. Slang is thought to overcome the difficulties in medical practice due to the diagnostic uncertainty, the problems in treating patients, and to distance practitioners from disease. The term ʻjargon’ refers to special vocabulary of professionals to discuss their activities, the equipment, or its use. The desire for this exclusive language appears as a symbol of partnership, solidarity, and supremacy among them. The study offers a classification of medical slang and jargon terms suggesting guidelines for its management in the teaching practice. The author believes that slang and jargon terminology provides a comprehensive perspective for teachers of English for specific purposes (ESP). In order to provide a full insight into medical terminology for students, slang and jargon, such as short forms, acronyms, and metaphors, are inevitable issues for teachers in higher education.
