The source of my doctoral thesis is the witchcraft trials of Szeged, Hungary. These documents were created from 1726 to 1744, and as official court proceedings, they are particularly suitable for historical dialectological and sociolinguistic analysis. The texts of witch trials can be considered to be based on spoken language or related to spoken language, and they may provide data about language usage by witnesses, dialect of the scribes, regional norm, bilingualism, and also sociolinguistic or dialectal variables.
The analysis contributes to the partial description of the use of language in the 18th century by examining the corpus in detail. In addition to the linguistic analysis, the thesis also contains the literal transcription of the used source (Appendix). The paper also presents that the transcripts are complex and can be examined not only for e.g. the content of the testimonies, but also for historical dialectology and historical sociolinguistics. Besides, spontaneous standardization efforts also appeared at that time and affected the writing practice of clerks, so it is needed to deal with different variables in order to get an idea of their position in the standardization process.
In my paper, I have four aims:
1. to separate the clerks who made the documents
2. to determine the dialect of clerks
3. to characterize the use of written language
4. to separate the data of witnesses
The thesis presents that I could differentiate 14 clerks by paleographic and linguistic characteristics, and also I could specify the dialect of clerks by linguisctic phenomena. I characterized the scribes according to the same scheme (graphemics, ortography, abbreviations, hyphenation, corrections, and dialect). Based on the data, I tried to locate the native language region of the clerks. I also referred to the possibility that an element may have been more typical in the use of the witness's language (Chapters 3 to 4). I also presented which suffixes and lexemes are identical versions that can be found by several clerks, i.e. which may have formed part of the clerical norm (Chapter 5). Chapter 6 contains a comparison of drafts and copies – based on the data, I tried to show what the norm concept of the scribes must have been.
