The constructions of Gabriel Bethlen from Alba Iulia actually mark an individual epoch in the evolution of the late Renaissance architecture in Transylvania. His name is linked to the reconstructions following the massive depredations from the turn of the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries. The constructions that turned the town into a real princely residence were launched by the same Bethlen, to be continued by the princes George Rákóczi I and II until the devastation of the town in 1658. As much as we can reconstruct the ideas and plans of Bethlen regarding Alba Iulia these seem to confirm the complimentary appraisement of John Szalárdi towards the prince. New sources discovered in the last few years allow us to reconstruct the topography as well as certain details of the former decoration of the palace built by Bethlen.
