A revision of the nomenclature of well-known gastropod fauna from the Upper Triassic Dachstein Limestone of Budapest (Buda Hills) and thoughts on fate of the type collection

In the first half of the 20th century, outcrops of Dachstein Limestone in the Budai-hegység (= Buda Hills, Budapest)yielded the most abundant and diverse Norian gastropod fauna of the Alpine Triassic, especially from the Remete-hegylocality. This fauna is complemented by Late Carnian species from the Fazekas-hegy. Even today this collection can beregarded as one of the richest available sources of information for studies on the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic faunalchanges. However, its optimal applicability requires a systematic revision of nomenclature; this is mainly because of thedevelopments which have occurred over a period of more than seven decades since publication of the first results.This paper summarises the results of the revisions that have been carried out so far. It also centres on the history of thisparticular science and looks at some interesting details concerning the original collection of the fauna. Detaileddocumentation and selection of types are planned for further publications about the formal revision; these are already inpreparation. Here details are presented about the revisions of the genera which have been established on type-species fromthe Budapest (Budai-hegység) Norian gastropod fauna. The modified characterisation, based on a systematic updating ofthe respective compositions, does not support the earlier assumption that the gastropod fauna has distinct Palaeozoicfeatures. Because of the high ratio of taxa occurring locally, the faunal list shows considerable differences, even betweenother Alpine-type gastropod assemblages of a similar age; the Norian gastropod faunas from remote areas also showmarkedly different processes of evolution.

A Budai-hegység Dachsteini Mészkövéből az Alpi térség leggazdagabb és legváltozatosabb nori gastropoda-faunájakerült elő a huszadik század első felében a remete-hegyi lelőhelyről, kiegészítve a Fazekas-hegy késő-karni fajaival. Ma isúgy kell erre a gyűjteményre tekintenünk, mint a késő-triász és a kora-jura közötti faunaváltás egyik legbőségesebb,hozzáférhető információforrására. Optimális hasznosítása azonban előzetes rendszertani-nevezéktani revíziót igényel,tekintettel a szisztematika terén az első publikálás óta eltelt több, mint hét évtized során lezajlott fejlődésre.Ez a cikk a revízió eddig elért eredményeit és az eredeti gyűjteményhez kötődő tudománytörténeti tanulságokatfoglalja össze. A részletes dokumentálás és az utólagos típuskijelölés, illetve -pótlás további, szigorú értelemben vettrendszertani publikációk keretében várható. Itt a munkának ez utóbbi részét a budai-hegységi nori gastropoda-faunábólvaló típusfajra alapozott három genus revíziójának a részletei szemléltetik.A frissített rendszertani összetétel alapján adható jellemzés nem erősítheti meg azt a korábbi véleményt, amely szerinta gastropoda-fauna határozottan paleozoos jellegű lenne. Emellett a rendszertani összetétel már a hagyományosan „alpi”típusba sorolható faunákkal szemben is számos egyéni vonást mutat; a távolabbi földrészek késő-triász leletei pedigegyértelműen „különutas” fejlődést dokumentálnak.
