Az alábbiakat azon személyes tapasztalataim alapján írom, amelyeket mint a Forradalmi Karhatalmi Bizottság elnöke, a Nemzetőrség főparancsnoka és Budapest katonai parancsnoka szereztem 1956-ban. Az azóta eltelt fél évszázad alatt ezeket a tapasztalatokat kiegészítettem minden elérhető okmány, valamint a résztvevők visszaemlékezéseinek tanulmányozásával. Több mint egy tucat nemzetközi tudományos konferenciát rendeztem, amelyeken a forradalom és szabadságharc résztvevői magyar és külföldi kutatókkal vitatták meg az események jelentőségét. Ezeknek a konferenciáknak az anyagát angolul megjelentettük az „Atlantic Studies on Society in Change” könyvsorozatban. Több tanulmányt magyar nyelven is kiadtunk. Mindezek alapján írom le a forradalomban és a szabadságharcban részt vett különböző fegyveres testületek – a néphadsereg, a rendőrség, a határőrség, az ÁVH és a belső karhatalom – akkori állapotát és az eseményekben betöltött szerepét, a szovjet agresszió alakulását, illetve a felkelők harci tevékenységét Budapesten és vidéken. Kitérek a szabadságharc nemzetközi megítélésének összefüggéseire is: nemcsak a világ közvéleményének ítéletére a magyarországi eseményekről, de olyan nemzetközi biztonságpolitikai megfontolások taglalására is, amelyek a remélt nyugati katonai segítség elmaradását magyarázzák. | The author – one of the military leaders of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence – reviews those events in historical perspective. On October 23 the demonstrating students demanded peaceful but fundamental changes, in order „to give Communism a human face”. However, they responded with violence when the Bolshevik regime applied armed force against them. On October 24 the Soviet armed forces intervened also, and started to fire on the Hungarian freedom fighters. At the beginning the revolutionaries had no central leadership; they were guided solely by the idea of independence and freedom. On October 28 the head of the government, Imre Nagy, declared an armistice that all fighting parties respected: the Revolution thus triumphed. The freedom-fighter combat groups were organized into the armed force of the Revolution, the National Guard, and started to protect the consolidation of the revolutionary regime. In the early morning hours of October 31 an immense Soviet military force invaded Hungary: its size and operations indicated that an undeclared war commenced on that day. The Soviet Union conducted a contemptible diplomatic manoeuvre, letting the Hungarians believe its promise to withdraw from the country. On November 3 an agreement was even signed to that effect. When the Hungarian delegates appeared at the Soviet headquarters in the town of Tököl, however, they were captured, and in the early morning hours of November 4 the shooting phase of the war commenced. The immense superiority of Soviet armed forces brutally crushed Hungary’s democratic government and society.
