Tartalmi leírás:
The paper analyses a part of the Catholic view on Gabriel Bethlen based on two groups of texts. The first group consists of the chronicle of the nobleman Gergely Pethő continued by the vice-chancellor Sámuel Kálnoki and by the Jesuit András Spangár. Th e second group gathers texts associated with the works of the Jesuit historiographer Sámuel Timon (with their debated authorship between Tamás Rost and Ferenc Kazy). In the selected historiographical works the analysis focused on aspects of Gabriel Bethlen’s life: the start of his reign as Prince of Transylvania, his characterization and his death. Every text features the topos of his friendship with the Turks and the Turkish aid, present not only in posthumous works, but also as subject for the political life, the pamphlets and the gazettes published in Bethlen’s lifetime. The image of Bethlen appears gloomier in the works of Kálnoki, Spangár and Tamás Rost, where the deeds of the prince are tied with the physical affl ictions caused by the sickness that led to his death. The persecution of the Catholics and the takeover of Hungarian throne are presented in everyone of these texts. Based on this analysis it can be implied that the clerical and the secular historiographies intertwine. But even if the text started by the secular historiographers are continued and published by cleric scholars, the confession of the author determines, within certain degrees, the view on the historical events presented.
