Tartalmi leírás:
One of the most important parts of the volume – considered in certain sense as the monograph of the medieval Transilvanian winged altar production – is the Catalog of Medieval and Early Modern Transylvanian Altarpieces, Panel Paintings and Wood Sculptures (120–258. pp). The information and the photos published attached to the 94 items of this Catalog create an extraordinary important database in itself. In the chapter The History of Interest in Transylvanian Altarpieces (9–14. pp) the author summarizes the Previous Scholarship of her subject, and the history of the restauration of the analysed altarpieces (Restorations. The Workshop of Gisela Richter in Kronstadt). In the chapter of Th e Historical and Social Situation in the Region between the Fourteenth and the Sixteenth Centuries, with Special Reference to Masters, Guilds and Altarpieces (15–22. pp) the author gives an overwiev of the historical situation in Transylvania. This part is followed by the Evidence Provided by the Objects. Th e Preliminaries of Local Mass-Production – an Overview (22–31. pp.), which gives an overview of the stilistic changes based exclusively on the few artworks survived from the 14th and from the fi rst two-thirds of the 15th century, from the period considered to be relative early from the point of view of the late-medieval altarpiece production. To the essence of the volume belong the studies concerning some selected details of the medieval Transylvanian altarpiece production: I.2. Transylvanian Altarpieces at the End of the Fifteenth century. The Followers of the Viennese Schottenmeister in Transylvania (32–90. pp.) and I.3. Vincencius Pictor Cibinensis. The Workshop of a Transylvanian Master in the Sexteenth Century (114.pp.). The author consideres the 1480-ies as the first really coherent period in the art of winged-altarpieces, and presents it through a group of artworks bound to the Viennese Schottenmeister’ style, to the stylistic manner characterizing almost the whole period in Transylvania. The protagonist of the next (I/3) chapter is the painter Vincencius of Hermannstadt, known first of all of his unusual rhyming signatures. The study presents suggestively the long Transylvanian activity and the infl uence of the moderate talented master and of his workshop.
