Gabriel Bethlen inherited a heterogeneous elite, wrought with religious and political differences. This problem was made more difficult by a period of war and internal power struggles between 1594 and 1613, which greatly reduced the numbers of said elite. Bethlen systematically rebuilt it and broadened its base by recruiting from the ranks of the traditional Transylvanian nobility and the Szekler leaders (Primors). His inner circle consisted of his own extended family and the politicians who shared his emigration to Istanbul. He successfully eliminated the catholic party that was closely linked to the Habsburgs but the elite still showed a mixed picture from a religious point of view. It was characterised by the overrepresentation of Catholics in the elite, the decline of the Unitarians and the slow but steady rise of the Calvinists. In this period, there were significant changes in the composition, structure and proficiency of the elite, as well as in its political goals. Bethlen’s rule is a watershed in the history of the Transylvanian elite. By the end of his reign, a new aristocracy was created, one whose families defined the course of Transylvanian politics for centuries to come.
