Tartalmi leírás:
There were a few reasons why the inhabitants of free royal town Eperjes did not support the uprising of Gabriel Bethlen. During the first half of the seventeenth century the Hungarian cities and towns did not feel the pressure of centralization so strong, which made the Habsburgian court a sole (Protestant) nobility. The economic policy of the Monarch was not in opposition to the interests of bourgeois, for he did not abridge their laws and competences. Also the state censuses and dues were not so onerous for the economic growth, so the towns could accept them. However, the objective of Eperjes, the free royal town, was to preserve peace and have positive relations with the King, because it would guarantee them the continuation of economic growth. In light of this the inhabitants of free royal town Eperjes could accept the idea of uprising only as a means to bolster confi dence, but, most importantly, to defend their belief. Nonetheless, the inhabitants of Eperjes expressed complacency with regard to religious freedom, as was clear from an article published in 1608, in which no allegations were made. At the end of the 1620s, the bourgeois in Eperjes did not have an interest in staging a military uprising against the Monarch, because they could lose more than gain.
