Johann Joachim Rusdorf (1589–1640), statesman and diplomat published a monumental illustrated album about the 1620’s Europe dominant personalities. As on the present-day photos of the heads of state meetings, here we can see together all those who counted in European politics: Gabriel Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania was immortalized in the company of the well-known figures of that age: Swedish King Gustav Adolph II, Emperor Ferdinand II, King of Bohemia Frederick V, Wallenstein commander, and the frighteningly smart French Minister of State, Cardinal Richelieu. If on the pamphlets’ prints Bethlen is an equal partner of the Western statesmen and rulers, on the pages of the pictured newspapers he was leading Janissaries against the Christians, or he was a fox with a turban as a modern-day fairy tale character. In the same manner the Th irty Years’ War historians have made an exaggerated profi le of Gabriel Bethlen. According to Leopold Ranke, Bethlen was a great and dominant personality of the Thirty Years' War, while in Golo Mann's brilliant biography of Wallenstein he was depicted as Europe's enemy, barbarian, Turkish and Tatar. Considering these descriptions, the present study aims to examine how can be explained Gabriel Bethlen’s meaningful presence in Europe on the revolving stage of these extreme opinions.
