Summary A method based on the elassieal Preisach model is proposed to describe the static 2D vector magnetic behaviour of anisotropic - grain-oriented - silicon iron sheets. A theoretical magnetic partiele, endowed with orientation in the sheet' s pláne is introduced to depict the relationship between the field strength vector at the surface of the sheet and space-averaged magnetization vector through its cross-section. The magnitude of magnetization is governed by a elassieal Preisach operator. Its input is the projection of the field strength vector on the magnetization direction, while its orientation is determined by the equilibrium between the field strength orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. The material is approximated by a elassieal continuum, its domain structure being neglected. The sheet is considered to consist of a set of non-interacting particles of the proposed kind, which yield the macroscopic magnetic characteristic of the real material.
