Abstract A simple computational procedure for shape characterization of 3-D objects is presented. The technique proposed is based on the computation of a shape factor defined as a function of the volume and the polar moment of 3-D particles. The method is demonstrated by an application which concerns the simulation of phase transformations in alloys by means of a stochastic cellular automaton algorithm.
