Tartalmi leírás:
After a brief presentation of the 16th century European marriage reforms and of the different strategies that reformers adopted to resolve divorce requests, the author turns to the question of divorce in the Reformed Church in the 17th century Transylvania. Based on the entries of the Register of Partial Synods of the Szék Seniorate, the present study focuses on a group of divorce requests that were not accepted by the official ecclesiastical opinion as thoroughly grounded cases. The author presents different situations of life that urged men and women from the lower strata of the society to ask the official dissolution of their marriage even if the presented reasons were not part of the official ecclesiastical ideology that permitted divorce. But the question is whether or not these cases can contribute to the formulation of general statements concerning the norms of the community related to marriage? Where came into collision the individual strategies, collective mentalities and the official ideology? However, the author argues that the evoked grounds for divorce could represent valuable sources for understanding marriage and married life in the 17th century Transylvania, especially from the perspective of collective mentalities and social sensibilities.
