This study deals with the relationship between the Prince of Transylvania and Brassó (Kronstadt/Braşov), one of the most important communities of the autonomous Saxon Universitas (Saxon Land) focusing on a special aspect, namely on the right of the city to the dominium and customs of Törcsvár (Törzburg/Bran). As important border fortress and customs station, Törcsvár, better said the right to the possession of the customs incomes and the dominium, often turned into a point of hard discussions between Brassó and the rulers of Transylvania. The revealed materials of the Town Archive show the debate between Gabriel Bethlen and the town referring the possession of Törcsvár. Bethlen doubted the privileges of Brassó on Törcsvár fi rst in 1616, in a year of serious conflicts, which ended with the rise of his authority in Transylvania and in the surrounding countries. After several discussions the prince forced the town of Brassó to take principal soldiers into Törcsvár granting princely military control over the castle, further he increased the revenues collected from the same costumes station. The documents shed light on the financial solutions of Gabriel Bethlen in order to strengthen the principal policy on concentrating dominiums and increasing central control in the finances, furthermore, they reveal the prevailing relationship between the central power and the estates of Transylvania – regarding the case of Brassó the Saxon feudal nation – in accordance with certain tendencies of the Western state development.
