Gyulay Lajos 1809 és 1869 között írott naplófolyamának megközelítése minimum problematikus, és számos metodikai problémát vet fel. Hogyan lehet, illetve hogyan érdemes egyáltalán írni róla, mivel a korpusz mint egész megközelítése gyakorlatilag lehetetlen? A jelen tanulmány több naplókötetet vizsgál, szemelvényeket a „karrier” elejéről, s hangsúlyosabban a végéről. A cél tehát nem lehet szentenciák kijelentése, mivel a teljes szövegkorpusz ismerete nélkül fokozottan fennáll a tévedés lehetősége. Általános igazságok helyett tendenciákat keresünk, amelyek a nem célzottan kiválasztott naplókban érvényesülnek (tehát nem szövegeket válogattam a kijelentéseim alátámasztására, hanem a kiválasztott szövegekhez próbálok érvényes megjegyzéseket fűzni).

Count Lajos Gyulay bequeathed the journal series amounting to 150 volumes to the “gentle and potential reader” during his lifetime. It would be too simple to stigmatise the author with pathological graphomania, instead, it is worth considering the motivation of this activity. In my view, if we realize to what extent writing as the gesture of commemoration formed an organic part of Gyulay’s life, the journal series cannot be sunk into “the archive of oblivionis”. Through writing the count commemorates the beloved members of his family, his educator (Gábor Döbrentei) and his friends. At the same time we can see that memory is not the same as history. While reading the journals I try not to consider them as documents of the age with a referential value, but rather as Gyulay’s material, carefully constructed legacy, with which (in lack of an heir) he “immortalizes” his own person. This is my aim when I examine several volumes of journals and look for the traces of self-fashioning and self-cancellation in the texts. I also pay attention to how the continuous and systematic journal keeping becomes a constitutive part of the author’s life to the extent that the triangle writer – act of writing – text seems to transform, writing almost gaining authonomy as if the journal itself wrote Gyulay. I highlight moments which demonstrate that the plane of the events of outer, objective reality interferes with the plane of the reality of narration.
