Tartalmi leírás:
The aim of the paper is to draw attention, through a few examples taken from European dramatic literature, to the significance of violence and other related provocative elements. After examples of provocative dramas, containing violent scenes, from the antiquity, the Elizabethan theatre, then the second half of the twentieth century, I shall detail the dramas of the authors of the “in-yer-face” theatre formed in the 1990s. The paper analyses the cause of the occurrence of violence on stage, its similarities and differences in different ages; from among contemporary writers, it deals with authors like Anthony Neilson, Mark Ravenhill or Sarah Kane, who recently died in tragic circumstances. These dramas, which seem exceptional at first glance – by now there have been several performances in our country –, contain elements and motifs based on which they can be integrated into the tradition of twentieth-century European drama.
