The Lethe is the river of forgetfulness in Greek mythology and in Baudelaire’s poem profoundly pervaded by corporeality in Les Fleurs du Mal.
The poem was fi rst translated into Hungarian by one of the leading translators of the “great generation” of the Nyugat, Mihály Babits, then by Zoltán Franyó and (a few decades ago) by József Tornai. I wish to examine to what extent Babits’s translation reflects the traditions of individual translation, respecting the form, represented by his generation, to what extent this strategy obscures the eroticism and mythical allusions of Baudelaire’s poem and to what degree the later translators followed the norm set up by Babits, in what direction their translations move the connotations of the poem.
