The study focuses on the relationship between Gabriel Bethlen and the inhabitants of Gyergyó. Gabriel Bethlen was a member of the Lázár family of Gyergyószárhegy on the maternal line, so he spent some of his young years in Szárhegy. During the reigns of István Báthory, Kristóf Báthory, then Zsigmond Báthory, Gyergyószárhegy was one of the most important recruiting and military training centres for the Szeklers of Gyergyó, Csík and Kászon. Th e young Gabriel Bethlen, although he had received only a scarce amount of intellectual schooling at the settlement near Gyergyó, this gap was significantly filled by the possibility to acquire military knowledge, which became a life-long foundation for his future achievements as a general. Th e fact that Gabriel Bethlen was related to the Lázár family, as well as his other relations with the Szeklers of Gyergyó influenced the Szekler-related policies of the prince in a decisive manner. Gabriel Bethlen kept in touch with his cousin, Lázár IV. Isván, whom he appointed “aulae familiaris”. Moreover, when he freed the serfs of the Székely peers and primipili, he made an exception with the Lázár family of Szárhegy in this respect, as well. However, he elevated several serfs and libertines to a higher social status. Due to his Szekler-related policies, Gyergyó’s social structure has changed substantially. His cousin and the Szeklers of Gyergyó also took part in the military operations led by Gabriel Bethlen.
