Géza Csáth, the short-story writer and psychiatrist, was a leading figure at the beginning of the Hungarian modernity. Csáth received a degree in medicine, and his experiences as a doctor strongly influenced his writing. The new psychological conceptions of the early 20th century were among the most influential ideas. Csáth was one of the first in Hungary to eagerly follow the discoveries of Sigmund Freud. The first part of the three part paperdeals with the psychological prose of Géza Csáth. The aim of my work is to analyze the genre conventions of the short story and representation of the mental lives of fictional characters. The my study is based on the narrative theory of Mikhail Bakhtin, Lidija Ginzburg,Gérard Genette, Käte Hamburger, Dorrith Cohn, István Dobos and Viktor Žmegač.
