Dr. Sándor Bányai (1873-1943) was born in Pluho (now a town in Slovakia). He graduated at Medical Faculty of Budapest University in 1896. Before graduation he visited the surgical department of the Jewish hospital in Gyár street. The patients’ dental problems were treated only after the surgical procedures because there was no separated dental ward or outpatient unit. After graduation he visited every day the surgical department, and after the surgical procedures he treated the patients’ dental problems. He used his proper instruments and cared for free of charge, which indicates clearly his generous humanity. For upgrading his dental knowledge and skills he went to study abroad ( Philadelphia, and the Humboldt University, Berlin). After returning home in 1905, Professor Bertalan Stiller charged him with organizing the dental treatment for both outpatients and inpatients. He managed to establish a completely separated, well equipped dental department with well trained personnel. The newly erected Jewish  hospital (by Aladar Kaszab) gave a new location of his separated, modern dental department. He started also here the postgraduate dental training of young medical doctors. Bányai wrote numerous books and the most important of which was the first textbook for dental nurses. His technical invention was the Bányai’s cotton roll holding device.
