In the spring of 1945, the German military concept was aimed at pushing the Soviets and her auxiliary allies out of Transdanubia, for which a significant number of ar-mored forces were assembled and stationed in this region. This German counter of-fensive started out from three directions, in which the third auxiliary military opera-tions started from the south bank of the Drava river and planned to advance to the north. Instead of pushing Soviet-Bulgarian forces back while reaching the Mecsek heights or the Danube river, both sides got stuck for weeks. Against the preliminary military plans, the German forces could capture and hold a wide bridgehead north of the Drava river only, but held it despite continuous counterattacks. The purpose of this article is to present the military history of this German bridgehead around Drávaszabolcs village in March 1945.
