Tartalmi leírás:
The dissertation undertakes a philosophical and theatre-theoretical reinterpretation of the oeuvre of Antonin Artaud. Its starting point is that the reception of Artaud tends to focus on specific fragments of his work; as a result, he is often not treated as an independent thinker but rather as an illustrative figure within various theoretical frameworks. This research aims to uncover the internal coherence of Artaud’s thought and to interpret the concept of the “theatre of cruelty” within the context of his oeuvre as a whole. The central thesis of the dissertation is that Artaud’s theatre of cruelty is not merely a theatre-theoretical concept, but an existential practice unfolding in the unity of theatre, faith, and life. To explore this, the study interprets Artaud’s oeuvre from the philosophical perspective of Søren Kierkegaard, not in order to reconstruct historical relations of influence between the two thinkers, but to reveal their shared existential structures. The analysis focuses on the relationship between the individual and the Absolute, the existential role of faith, the question of the self, theatricality, and indirect communication. The dissertation interprets Artaud’s oeuvre as a coherent philosophical framework and argues that the theatre of cruelty is grounded in the existential experience of the divine. It further demonstrates that Artaud can be understood as a figure of the Kierkegaardian poetic existence, while also showing that, despite his criticisms of Shakespeare, the theatre of cruelty in several respects continues the tradition of the Renaissance emblematic theatre. The study introduces the concept of “theatre beneath the skin”, which understands the theatre of cruelty as an internal, existential space of the subject.
