The dissertation, At the Threshold of the Revival Movement: Local Knowledge, Agency and the Negotiation of Tradition, examines the life and cultural work of Paulina Benke, a heritage keeper from the Moldavian Hungarian village of Somoska, Romania. It investigates how local knowledge, community relationships, and individual agency contribute to the preservation, transmission, and renewal of folk culture within the broader framework of the Hungarian folk revival (Táncház) movement. The dissertation critically challenges the approaches of the portray of Moldavian Hungarians as primarily marginalized and passive communities. Instead, it emphasizes the knowledge, initiative, and active role of local actors in shaping cultural processes and safeguarding heritage. Its theoretical framework is based on dance anthropology, local knowledge, cultural transmission, and acculturation. The research adopts a qualitative and collaborative methodology combining fieldwork, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, oral history, life history, and the analysis of online sources and social media. Community members are approached not as research subjects but as equal partners in the co-production of knowledge. The dissertation reconstructs Paulina Benke’s life history, from her early encounters with traditional music, dance, and customs to her leading role within the Táncház movement. It examines her contribution to the establishment of the Somoska dance group, the Csángó Bál, the Somoskai Faluhét, and other community initiatives that strengthened the continuity of local traditions. The findings demonstrate that the preservation of Moldavian Hungarian cultural heritage depends largely on the long-term commitment of locally embedded individuals. Paulina Benke’s work illustrates that heritage preservation is an active process of negotiation, adaptation, and community participation, highlighting the importance of local knowledge in sustaining cultural identity across generations.
