The presence of Bulgarians in the Carpathian Basin during the 9th century remains one of the
most debated issues in early medieval studies. In Southern Transylvania, a group of cemeteries
dated to the late 9th and early 10th centuries has long been interpreted as archaeological
evidence of Bulgarian political control. Traditionally classified as the Csombord–Maroskarna
horizon, these sites were explained either as representing distinct ethnic groups (Moravian vs.
Bulgarian) or as a unified reflection of Bulgarian rule.
This dissertation critically re-evaluates these interpretations by applying a comparative
and methodologically revised approach. Rather than treating archaeological phenomena as
direct indicators of ethnicity, the study focuses on burial customs, material culture, and regional
connections. The analysis demonstrates that neither the Csombord nor the Maroskarna group
can be reliably linked to a specific ethnic population based on the available evidence. Key
arguments previously used to support a Bulgarian attribution—such as supposed biritual
cemeteries, amphora-shaped vessels, and animal offerings—prove insufficient when examined
in a broader regional context.
The examine highlights the importance of ritual transformation, particularly the shift
from cremation to inhumation, as a major explanatory factor behind the observed diversity in
burial practices. It also emphasizes the role of long-term cultural interactions with the Lower
Danube region, which reflect economic, technological, and symbolic connections rather than
direct political domination or large-scale migration. Furthermore, the dissertation demonstrates
that the cemeteries in Southern Transylvania do not form a homogeneous archaeological group.
The site of Alba Iulia–Ambulance Station, in particular, reveals a highly complex and
heterogeneous burial community that cannot be divided into clearly distinct chronological or
ethnic phases.
Overall, the research argues that the 9th–10th century archaeological record of Southern
Transylvania should be understood as a multi-layered, transitional cultural horizon shaped by
local traditions, regional networks, and broader socio-economic transformations. Instead of
reconstructing linear ethnic succession, the study proposes a microregional and relational
interpretive framework, offering a more nuanced understanding of early medieval processes in
the Carpathian Basin.
