The rising expectations of employees and the need for organizations to evolve and adapt to these expectations is pivotal, if the end goal is to engage and retain the workforce. This study investigates the role of emotional intelligence and purpose-driven work in driving employee engagement and retention. Mixed-methods research combining employee surveys and student focus groups finds high intrinsic motivation with employees and students valuing meaningful work, supportive teams, and empathic leadership. The study shows that cultivating EI-based leadership, incorporating purpose into workplace systems, and aligning employee expectations will improve engagement and increase resilience leading to a thriving workplace.
